4L60E Shift Repair

in-too-deep

Had a clutch pack fail in my S-10. It's been awhile but I think it's 2-3 or maybe 1-2...maybe? Drives fine til it goes to shift and vroom and nothing. Happened 80k miles ago and I had a trans shop rebuild it. My question is this: how hard is it to replace the clutch packs? The truck has almost 300k and I only want to fix what's necessary to get by til the engine goes. That valve body terrifies me. Do I hafta get into that? I love learning new things and tackling projects I didn't think I could do...but I don't want to get too far over my head...or in too deep, if you will. The best part is, I know you guys will rescue me...right? : ) Thanks!

For my son's S10 Extreme with same tranny we just replaced the shift solenoids. Seems to be working so far.

Most likely a stop gap fix but I ain't putting $$ in his truck :)

The whole trans has to come out and apart to replace pieces inside. I would not recommend opening up a trans with that kind of mileage expecting to replace just one clutch, that is a recipe for frustration when it either doesn't work or something else quits. There are also some special tools involved in the PROPER repair that aren't available from loaner programs. I would find a used one one. That model of trans is common as dirt, check C-list, there is probably a S10 somewhere going to the scrapper.

I looked into used ones, and they want $400. Looks like a rebuild kit is under $200. You're right though, would probably be better off to just throw a used one in there. I know I can handle that.

Believe me,

Just gettin' that rascal down outta there is gonna make ya cuss yer mama..........

You don't even wanna open that thing up if you've never been inside one.
