Fresh Orange Juice Update (OT)

When I posted the picture of the basket of oranges yesterday, I forgot to post a pic of my old juicer so as I'm about to make a glass of fresh squeezed OJ this AM, I grab the phone for a quick photo or two.
My mom had a juicer like this when I was young. She said I could have it and then I found this one on Ebay and bought it too. It's a bit uglier so it's the one I use and I just treasure Moms and keep it stored. Hers is green and this one is white and labeled "Sunkist". It works great, is a huge step up from doing it by hand and I didn't have to buy one of those fancy high priced juicers of today.

I cut 4 oranges in half since I wasn't sure what I needed for one glass....I couldn't wait..I'll fill a pitcher full later!

Drop a half orange on the spinning cone and push down...

And 2 1/2 oranges later I have a glass full.

You just can't imagine how tasty these South Texas oranges are...mmmm...mmmm...mmmm.
Hey Larry, yes I would be glad to trade some oranges for turnips....but don't 'ya think the postage would be a bit pricey? Yes, I love turnips too!

Yea I know you were, but honestly I really do like turnips!
Yes the oranges are soooo tasty, too bad this is a computer screen and not a smellavision screen as you would love the smell :<D

My grand-daughter had a fund raiser at school- selling oranges. Wife bought a case, have them in the cool garage. But one already spoiled. So I got the idea to make juice. Unfortunately my wife gave our powered juicer away years ago, still has a by-hand one. I've been making juice, then pour the juice into ice cube trays and freeze it, then put the cubes in zip lock bags. Two juice cubes in a cup of water tastes good and hopefully will keep.

Those kind of juicers are better than the commercial ones that squeeze the whole orange. There is a small amount of juice in the orange peel that could change the taste and is actually flammable. I think all citrus fruit has flammable juice in the peel. Take a piece of orange peel, hold a lighter right in front of it and squeeze the juice at the lit lighter.

The oil in the peel is called D limonene. It is a solvent and a good degreaser (I use it in engines etc.) It is flammable in concentrate and some of the products that are made where I work have enough in them that they have to carry a DOT flammable sticker.
