I own a couple of tractors and love to hunt , so this is tractor related? Has anyone heard of a Whitetail deer die off in western ND and north western SD? I heard there has been a 60% die off in some areas from EHD this summer and fall?

O the rthan low survival rates of fawn in areas impacted by the severe drought ive not heard of any die offs. what is EHD?

I don't know exactly what it is, they call it black tongue. If you goggle it and specify ND soem articles come up about it.

Pheasant hunted for two weeks around Chamberlain SD. I never saw so many dead white tail deer. I was told what the problem was but I don't remember what I was told. I assumed it was some type of wasting disease like we had some of here in Michigan.

I don't think it was Chronic Wasting Disease.

I know Kentucky gets hit in various places with Blue Tongue every so often. If I understand correctly it's from a fly that lays eggs in their nose and the larva eats into their brain. Again, if I can recall correctly. If so, most of the dead dear die slow and you'll usually find the carcasses by or in the water.

Sorry to hear about the die off.

Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease a virus transmitted by biting flies. Clinical signs similar to Blue Tongue.

The fly bites thus transmitting the virus, has nothing to do with eggs hatching into larvae and migration of the larvae into the brain tissue.

sounds almost like the old screw worms we would fight all the time when i was a kid. I wonder why it wouldnt cross over into cattle also if it were caused by flies?

Not to be persistent but it is a disease of wild ungulates. It is a virus transmitted by biting flies. Pathology is not even similar to fly larvae (i.e. screw worms). Larvae have nothing to do with EHD or Blue Tongue.

Im from swnd and yes there have been alot of deer found dead. most of us think the root of the problem is game and fish trying to build the population up(more money from more tags). mother nature takes over when the deer numbers get too high. me and my neighbors would have 50- hundred deer in our yards all last winter and the winter before. game and fish now says we dont have any antelope in sw nd just today i had over a hundred in my pasture and have heard similiar numbers from many people west of me. wont be long before they are all sick and dying too. game and fish really needs to visit a proctology office to get their brains examined, i dont think they can count unless its $$. just my two cents. P.S. If the g&f rep that told me the hundred deer in my feed werent hurting anything reads this, go ahead and drive into a lake.
sorry for the rant and long post.

Yes it is a disease that they are getting because of an alge that is growing on the verly low water in ponds due to the drought. In some places here in eastern Kansas where the ponds are almost dry there has been over 50% kills.........

I live in central Nd, and yes, they have a disease related die off in western nd, but also very slim picking for deer and bird hunters (except ducks / geese) in the rest of the state. Two very hard, deep snow winters have reduced our area deer and phesant population by a guestimated 90%. 3 years ago, the huge deer over population on the road at night were a very real hazzard, but now you hardly ever see one.

"Bismarck, N.D. (AP) North Dakota wildlife officials say a disease that kills white-tailed deer appears to be present in a large part of western North Dakota.

Game and Fish Wildlife Chief Randy Kreil (kryl) says the department received isolated reports of deer deaths from the disease known as EHD in August, and reports have continued to come in. He says more than 13,000 white-tailed deer hunting license holders are eligible for refunds, and Game and Fish is suspending the sale of remaining licenses in some hunting units on Friday.

EHD is spread by midges. It is almost always fatal to white-tailed deer but not to mule deer. It is not known to affect people.

North Dakota had not had significant deer deaths from the disease since 2005."

For years the state of ND has been trying to reduce the deer numbers in SWND . They have held early doe seasons in units 3F1,3F2 and 4F. They reduced the costs to non-residents and they have never sold all the avaliable tags. I guess nature had a plan for reducing the numbers is hunters didn't. EHD goes away at the first frost, and deer populations will bounce back fast if there is habitate. Strange thing about EHD is that it kills whitetails and dosen't effect mule deer.

I beg to differ, it can infect mule deer as well as other wild ruminants such as antelope, black tailed deer, and big horn sheep.

It may be mother natures way of reducing numbers. We occassionally have mysterious deer die offs of 50 or so, but nothing like what I am hearing from western, ND. Here in Pa guys are constantly fighting with the Game Commission about deer tag allocations. Deer just aren't where they used to be, but people can't get that through there heads. They change there habits based on hunting pressure. We hunt NE and that hunting is a lot different than here in Pa. We don't have the wide open spaces. Pa whitetail would have a heart attack crossing some of the fields I have seen whitetail run throuigh out there. Also the buck to doe ratio is much better in NE comapred to here. Here we have areas that have too many deer and other classical hunting areas that have only a few left. I prefer western hunting and I sure hate to hear about die offs anywhere.

A Blacktail deer is a Mule deer.

Anyway the state of ND says it only is killing whitetails. Only guys that hold Whitetail tags can get a refund. Reports from my farms in SWND are that there are good Mule deer numbers, some Pronghorn and no Whitetails. Out in the badlands the elk and bighorn sheep are also doing fine. Whitetails were it that area. If it killed wild sheep it would be killing domestic ones, that is not happening either.
