Makes me wonder what combines will be like in 20 or 40 years from now- will they change as much as in the past 40 years? What would farmers of 100 years ago think of this?

You know, I think about that too. The biggest combines today are bumping up against a physical size issue. They can't go any wider or taller or they can't be hauled down the road, or driven down the road as far as that goes. So they have to cram more crop material through a space that can't be made any bigger. Here in Iowa combines aren't trucked to the next job but in the high plains area where the great wheat harvest ritual takes place every summer, transporting combines for many miles to the next job is part of the harvest. Local contractor was cutting some wheat near me. His Claas combine had a header that was about 25 feet wide. One of the fields he had to cut was a triangular piece of about 4 acres in area. It took him longer to put the header on the front end and couple up the PTO drive and the hoses than it did to cut the the field! The biggest Claas combine now has a header almost 40 feet wide.
