leyland 255 tractor

Are the hydraulics in gear? Lever on the left side and behind the seat... should be rearward, not sure if a 255 has a 3 position one or not, forward is off, centre is hydraulics, and rear is pto & hydraulics, if it only has a 2 position lever, the hydraulics are always on.

If that isn"t the problem, check the pump suction screen, at the bottom of the rear casting under the pto shaft, big plug, about 1 1/2inch in diameter, beware, there should be about 12 gallons of oil in there and it will all come out when the plug is removed. There should be a magnet inside the screen.

Also the hand clutch stops the pump. I kinda forget about it til I stop the PTO and wonder why the hydraulic don't work. I have a 272 and they did away with the disconnect in the lever.

Inside the lift unit on the rear of the tractor there is a steel pipe that goes from the control valve to the lift cylinder. I have had them split in the past so that could be your problem. Check to see if your external hydraulics are working and iff they are it could be that pipe leaking. MJ
