We have been useing sawdust for livestock bedding for awile now.Comes from a small family sawmill close to home. They use mostly low cost logs like Ash,cottonwood, etc. Now they are getting into walnut which I know is bad for horses, but is it safe for cattle, goats and other animals????

For a while, sawdust was popular on dairy farms, but fell out of favor. Some due to supply problems, but mostly because of increased mastitis issues. Re-used sand and stall pillows are now common.

Be careful of Ash, there is some find of disease (or something) in the trees. Some sawmills won't take it and there are restrictions regarding transporting Ash logs across state lines.
I'm not an expert, just know it is a problem.

There is a Beetle in the Ash Trees that are killing them thanks to imports from China. That is why there is no transportation of Ash across state lines, or from the area you purchased it for firewood.

If you use too much sawdust , you will soon change the PH of your fields. You will need to spread lots of lime to bring the PH back down.
