OT/ Detroit to Niagara Falls

I assume you're going through Canada, as it's nearly twice the distance to go around through the US. Don't expect to get into Canada these days without a passport. Also, you better not have a DUI or felony conviction on your record. If you do, don't think about entering Canada as they'll put you through a couple of hours of hell, then boot you back over the river. If you have any convictions, you have to go through a lengthy process (several weeks, I understand) to get permission to enter the country.

Quite frankly, it's a nice but boring drive between Detroit and Niagara. The major attraction along the way is Point Pelee National Park, which is famous as a major stop in the migration of Monarch butterflies. I've never seen it, but if you come through in September, you probably should check it out.

You do NOT need a passport to enter Canada But you will require 1 to re-enter the U.S.!! Old Highway 3 is a good 2 lane road following the north shore of Lake Erie in Ontario as an alternative to the 4/6 lane 401, 403 route.

Just went to Canada in June to go fishing, and we needed passports both ways. Btw a passport now costs around $130 and you get them at some post offices

Enhance driver's license is OK if your state happens to offer them and if you're not traveling by air. So far only Michigan, New York, Vermont and Washington are the only states that offer them. Even if you live in one of those states, it's no more aggravation to get a passport and be done with it.

Niagara Falls on the Canadian side does provide a better view, ride and things to do than the US side. So we'll assume you are entering Canada.
As previously stated. Use exceedingly great care, caution, meekness, courtesy and duct tape on loose mouths when crossing into Canada.
The good news is that you can stock up on bargain priced Crown Royal Rye at the Duty Free store.
Maid of the Mist and the tunnels are must see's.

hmmm... let's see Mark..

Martha Stewart has a Felony, and right after she served her sentence for (insider trading) she went to Canada to do a show..

and I have went to Canada twice since 2002 and I had a DWI in 1980 something...

~Will

Will, I don't doubt that Martha has been to Canada, although I don't know if it was before the new rules took effect. As I said, you can apply to get admitted if you have a conviction on your record.

What I do know, is with that DWI on your record, you'd better not try entering Canada NOW. Thanks to records sharing between the US and Canada, the Canucks know all about it.

Mark, thanks for your post to me telling me of the new rules.

Both times I went to Canada I had head of that law, that if one had a DWI they would not let one in, but I didn't let that stop me I went anyway.

I went in 2002 and again in 2004 and all the people I met there I liked well, I would go again someday.
