Reversed battery

I have inadvertely reversed my battery poles (in oter words STUPID error !!!) Both wire are black !

Anyways, I cranked it a bit before realising, then put them back in correct position. Tracktor will not start no more. It turn's but no start.

It is a 4 cyl Diesel David Brown tractor. There is no electronic on tractor.

Any idea ? Did I inject air in injectors or pump ? Would bleeding fix the problem ?

Please help !

if it didn't have a genny/reg, or an alternator, then you are likely ok.

pull start it if the battery won't do it.

Might have fried the fuel shut off solenoid in the injection pump if it has one.
Listen/feel if it still works when ye turn the key

On a diesel hooking up a battery should not matter as for starting. On a gas it should not either unless you have electronic ignition. Now as for the charging system well that can be another story. If you have an alternator you stand a good chance that you let the smoke out of it. If a generator you have a 50/50 chance you smoked something there all depends on the set up some will and some will not take that

since the solenoid is a simply coil of wirte just liek the start relay.. it should be fine.. IF something like an old DB even has one.

Check your fuses, if your fuel solenoid has a diode in it you would have had a direct path to ground with battery reversed. Fuses, switch, or wiring could have problems.

Your DB dealer or tractor mechanic have all seen this many times before and should be able to tell you what's most likely wrong over the phone.

Hopefully there is a big fusable link, fuse or circuit breaker that blows before the whole wiring harness completely melts. Follow the smoke, smell or look for melted insulation to find it. It should be close to the battery. Check if there is a wiring diagram in your operator's manual, it should show it too.

If it has an alternator you may have also fried the diodes in the alternator, but it would still start if that was all that was wrong.

Starter motors only go in one direction no matter what the polarity of the battery. Thus it didn't start because of some other reason (like fuel shutoff, or lack of fuel, lack of glow plug operation, or what ever.) Ask yourself why you needed to replace the battery. Was it because it ran the battery down trying to start it, or was it near dead from no charging system. Best of luck, Jim

I'd pull start it once you are sure the wires are correct. These tractors have notoriously temperamental electrical systems. I'd guess if the diode pack wasnt already blown it was by the wire reversal. Thats why you cant ever find a grill for one, everyone leaves them out so you can jump them easier. Lucas electronics, from the man who invented darkness......

OK, there's no way you cranked it backwards. Since it's a diesel, the problem must be fuel-related, unless the tractor has glow plugs (which I assume you would have already checked). The only common point between the electrical system and fuel system should be the fuel cutoff solenoid, so that's where I'd look. Like Offandgone said, there might be a diode in parallel with the solenoid. If so that diode is probably blown along with the switch or relay that activates the fuel solenoid.

Actualy,

There is not even a generator on this machine.
So I use a "fresh" charged battery when I want to run, which usually gets me around 10 decents crank starts.

It stalled because running in low rpm, bush hogger has hit a large chunk.

Battery was to weak to restart so I changed it.

I will investigate the gas option.

Thanks.
