Gettin ready to take my 6.4 Ford Diesel to the county fair truck pull, never pulled in a truck pull before, any tips or advice, its a 4x4 automatic, i know ill put it in 4x4, should i pull in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or just drive, etc? Start off slow or like a bat outta heck? its chipped, air intake, exhaust, dpf delete, puttin out about 550hp

Low Range!!!!! If the truck starts hopping (power hop) back out and get back in the throttle. It is better to not be in the top 3 and be able to drive your truck off the track than to go for the win and have to replace a driveshaft or axle to win a $20 trophy. I have never pulled a truck but I am a tractor puller and have seen hundreds of truck pulls.

I remember a new early 90's F250 4x4 diesel hooking up to the sled, tightening the chain, and then taking off. Couple feet and it dumped all of the tranny fluid on the ground and was towed off. Made a Chevy guy like me just smile. chris

best of luck to ya---my first thought was-"why the heck would anybody wanna treat a truck this way?? remembered my drag-race street rod days of 45+ yrs ago--now I remember!!

You got the chip and all the extra power. Did you beef up the drive train to go along with the extra power? Don't be surprised if you tear up a drive shaft up or worse, especially if you put it in low range. Even semi's with heavy duty drive shafts will still tear them up in bull low if the driver isn't careful.

It's Ford/ I Would Get A Real Truck First But They Cost $$$$$ More than a Ford/Cause Its A DODGE With A CUMMINS. Your Tire Presure is one thing to Check! The Amount of Tread one the tires & Type of Tread will be what gets you the Distance up the Track !!!!Hope you Do Well !!! It a Great thing to Try Just for Fun!!! I've used to Truck pull,Just dont have the time any more. One Thing to Rember IF it's Under Waranty and it breaks YOU WERE NEVER PULLING./If You get CaughtThey Fix it at Your Cost $$$.Saw a Fellow do his truck in at a pull[All Most NEW ]A Sales Man Was there & Was Taking PHOTO's,Monday morning the truck was at the Dealers for Repairs,Then the Photo's were Showed to him,That was a Real Show Stopper.

"why the heck would anybody wanna treat a truck this way??"

'Cuz the CHICKS dig it!

Is this a pulling truck or your street truck??? If it is your street truck then leave it at the parking lot and watch all the idiots ruin their trucks and spend big money for repairs. You can tear up several thousand dollars of stuff just to win Twenty bucks??????

One of our maintenance men,(young guy) bought a ford diesel he couldnt afford and pulled it at a pull. Blew both drive shafts off of it.

Now if truck is chipped it voids warranty . Remove all the add ons and programer and they they won't know ??Fail ,, ecu's have a "Boost Footprint " pid . when they see 60- 80 lbs of boost stored in ecu instead of 38-40 pretty much gives it away .

At 550hp you are operating way above my pay grade.
I suspect that you will need to replace your rear
shocks with fabricated solid struts. When I pulled
my new 1974 Jeep J20, I hooked onto a JD 4010 with
a friend operating the brakes to practice and determine what gear I wanted to start in and how
much clutch to sacrifice. It worked good then,
might of just got lucky.

LOL SIL brother kinda did the same thing at a tractor pull. New rear tires and tore off a lug. Monday morning called the tire place where they got the tires and was told by the owner "I was at the pull and saw what you did....NO WARRENTY on the tire". Dad who farms and drive OTR wasn't amuzed when he found out about it.

Just so you know, over fueled engines are really easy to spot. I've more than one guy p.o.ed that expected he could put a power programmer on them, melt a piston, and expect warranty coverage.

I'll second the "go in low range post". It'll want to shift, so maybe pull the shifter into 2nd. Start easy and get the sled moving then give open it up. Stop if she gets hopping, the driveshaft goes very soon after. Like the other post, I pull tractors, but have seen my share of the "stock" diesel pickup classes the last few years and this is what I've picked up. At our fair last week some of the guys near the top just had cold air intake and a few little things. Very little to no smoke. They just hooked up to the track well.

You"ve got a good truck for a street class truck. Ford has some of the best stock parts on their drivetrain. If it were mine I would pull 2nd low. At 550hp thats enough to get it to shift to 3rd but will likely fall on its face and loose most of your momentum. Like already stated, if it starts to bounce let out of it. Hold the brake and get a little boost before you take off. Like 5lbs or so. Good luck and have fun! Once you do it if yo are like me you will be hooked! HAHA I"ve got a 97 3500 dodge that I pull as well as drive on the street its probably around the same on horsepower or a little more.
