How to use a timing light

The tractor is back firing through the carb/air cleaner on my MF 135.

I was flipping through the articles on here and curious how to use the timing light to check the timing out.

If the timing is off...how do you make the adjustments on the distributor? My OEM Manuals do not cover this.

clip your light to the number one plug wire and point gun at the damper and the timing indicator and loosen the distributor clamp slightly and turn the distributor left or right to align the marks where needed.

I almost forgot, clean the groove out on the damper and take chalk to the lines on damper and timing mark to " highlight " them. It makes it easier to see them when lining them up.

Don't forget to tell him to be sure to set the timing at the engine speed specified in the manual, AND to then check the operation of the mechanical spark advance.

i sure you might know this anyway: don"t know if tractor is 6v or 12v, make sure timing light is for the same..... a question, does that engine have timing chains or gears....that would make it jump time, or could something else be happening/starting the problem...

As far as I know gears. It seems to go away when I adjust the carburator more but it comes back when I am in higher RPMs.

The engine is a Z-145 Continental. (before I totally forget)
