New Holland 273 Baler and Kicker

My 273 baler breaks bales because the kicker belts burn the twine off. I have remplaced and rebuilt just about everything and it still does it routinely. Anyone have some insight?? Please help.

Try making the bales a little shorter. Cutting 4 or 5 inches off the top rail in the bale chamber may help also. Finally if the throwing belts are worn too much, they will also burn the twine instead of catching the bale and throwing it. Make sure the top throwing frame is in the bottom set of holes as well. Good luck.....Ron

If you get a bale basket wagon you won't need a kicker and you won't have to unload the wagons either.

good luck
we bought a 2nd 273 w/ 54A kicker a couple of years ago and had this exact problem
our orig. 273 never, i mean never, breaks a bale for any reason...then we got a good deal on this b/c the guy thought it had knotter problems and we figured it would make a good parts baler...
it wasn't knotter problems...it burned the twine off of every 3rd bale
we had the 2 balers side by side and adjust the 2nd one so every clearance matched the first...tried short bales, long bales, more tension, less tension...no luck

heres what i learned

solution 1: use sissal twine instead of the poly...won't burn through that

solultion 2: shim the bale chamber so that the bales enter the kicker at a flatter or steeper angle depending on which belt is burning the twine

solution 3: get rid of baler and get one w/ a JD-style pan kicker...this is what we did...sold it to a guy who wasn't goingto use the kicker for a little more than what we paid for it and invested in a 311 w/ 72 thrower as our 2nd baler.

this may have been the most frustrating problem i have encountered in farm equip.

I feel your pain, I have the same problem occasionally. I am convinced that I need to shorten the bales a little and maybe have someone drive ahead slowly while I watch to see if the top belt should move in or out a little. Your top belt should have three positions to enable you to be sure that both belts engage at the same time. I know that you can't keep hay going in while turning at the end of the field! LOL

The answer is Buy a John Deere baler. No more bananna bales,no burnt off strings and a Deere will load the wagon fuller every time. We sold lots of hay and people would remark that these bales were from a JD. They never saw the baler but the bales were much more square than a new holland. My Dad had a brand new 273 and was very happy when it was traded on a JD.

well, I'm just lucky, as all I have ever used is JD balers. Had 2ea 24T's and now have 2ea 336's. The old No. 2 kickers literally beat themselves apart. The hydraulic kickers are almost perfect. Many times customers have commented on the squareness of the bales.
