backhoe opinions

Looking for opinions on backhoe purchase. I grew up using a Hopto hoe with frame mounted to an 8n. Looking to replace that with maybe a little bigger/ better hoe. Will be using it for just general farm cleanup, etc.
Was wondering if the 3 point ones are able to stand up. I do have a 1086 and 2-75 white that could be used for that purpose. Or, am I better off finding a dedicated BH, such as a 3414, case 580, etc. trying to stay under $10k. thanx for any help!

Go with a 580(letter series) Case. There are a lot of them out there and new and used parts are no problem.

I would buy a true back hoe and be done with it. Most 3 point types are for small light duty stuff and that is it. I have 2 friends that both own a 580. One has a 580B and the other a 580K. The 580K is a better machine but also a good bit newer

I was leaning towards the same thing, I know my dad had some problems when it came to getting parts for the hopto. Any opinions on 3414? I also have a Ford 2000 industrial available. I dont mind some repair as long as you can get parts!

I have used a 3pt on a 1086. Then rented a regular backhoe. Then bought an old 580B. I bought the 580 for what a good 3pt would cost am I am not sorry.

You can do 5 times with a backhoe compared to a 3pt. It is also always ready to dig without taking time to mount a 3pt model.

stay away from the 580 K they are a good hoe but the fuel and the hydrolic tanks are in the frame of the tractor and they crack out have to pull the motors to weld up again i have done a few weld jobs on those models so far

I have a 3414 gasser. It"s been a tough machine, engine always starts no matter how cold it is and does what i need it to do. Getting parts for it are hard to find and very expensive if you can get tnem at all. If I was looking to replace it, I would go for a 310 or 410 deere,545 ford or 580k case. Remember you do get what you pay to get.

My neighbor has a small 3pt hoe mounted on his tractor. He does some digging with it from time to time.

At the farm here we have an old IH 260A that has been around the block about 5x. But it will do more work at idle than that little 3pt hoe will do running full bore. Once the neighbor saw the "real" back hoe at work he just pays us to dig things for him and leaves his parked. ha

I bought a 1970 Ford 4500 half-dozen years ago- manual transmission. Did not want the later ones with their first torque converter. Has worked fine for my needs, paid 6 grand for it, typical price around here.

I posted a question like this a few days ago- about a Bobcat hoe attachement, got no replies, it is still for sale, looks, feels a little heavy for my cockshutt or MF65, but a tiny skid steer runs it! It would have to be powered off the tractor's hydraulic system, or a pto one made up, so I dunno. I have checked out the Harbor freight's tow along, good enough to replace a shovel, but a rope start!....kinda cheesey. But all a small tractor would have to do is get bolted up to a loader frame, dunno about that one either....

South central MN, so heavy black soil with clay at about 2 feet. Ten foot depth is probably plenty good. 24" trench would be fine. Will be used only once in ahwile. Like I said, the 8n i am familiar with, worked fine. Dug in alot of tile in the 70's. Was just planning on getting something a bit more modern, little larger, and most important, parts availability. Would like to stay under 10k.

We had a three point hitch Howard "Power Arm" dad bought new circa 1970. It was a good machine, and better than a shovel. I eventually bought an IH 3444. That was a tough, economical machine. I now have a Ford 655A with hyd. extendable boom. I have enough deep ditches around the farm the bigger machine comes in handy.

Bought a early 70s ('71, I think) 580 CK diesel/manual shuttle about 25 years ago for $5500. Seldom use it since I retired, but it's sitting ready to go. It's one of those things you wonder how you ever lived without.
