OT kerosene in 4 wheeler

My nephew was running my 4 wheeler today and ran out of gas. He filled it accidentally with kerosene and ran it for a bit and then put it in the bldg. I siphoned the kerosene out and put gas in but now it won't start. Any suggestions?

Tell nepnew to pull out spark plug, spin engine over for min. off and on, give the starter a break now and then. clean or put in a new spark plug and give her a try.

No big deal. Drain the kero from tank and carb, purge the cylinder of excess kero as stated below, put in new gas, good clean plug and she should take off.

It will be a little hard to start at first until you get all the kero out as it is hard to get a spark plug to light it off. After it is up and going again just ride it for a half hour or so and it will be good as new.

Take the four wheeler to the dealership and have them flush the system. Make the nephew pay the dealership bill.Nephew will be more careful next time.

kerosene soots up spark plugs.Change the spark plug.My Dad used some kerosene in his 34 Ford during gasoline rationing. He would have to take out the plugs and clean them on the road.Lots of soot hanging from them.

No big deal. The old all fuel tractors started on gasoline and then switched to a middle distillate and then back to gasoline for shutdown. I would label my cans better so it doesn't happen again.

IMO, a better teaching moment would be to supervise nephew to fix it himself. After all, it was an accident.

Nephew obviously did not check that the container was kerosene instead of gasoline. It was a naive and stupid, yet honest mistake. Nephew should know to positively identify unknown fuel can next time.

Instruct nephew to clean or replace spark plug, fresh gas in tank, drain carb until gas comes through. The fix should be well within capability of nephew with supervison. Go have ice tea and let any spillage evaporate before trying it. Should be good to go.
