Pond advice...please

My girls , Love to fish, cacthing big or little 1`s But the lilly pads have take`n over. Last year I tried a Wally or RK liquid that I swear, when I sprayed it, I heard those lilly`s snicker`n...lol!.It was a copper "something(sulfate). Anyway, today after we went for Mother`s day dinner, we went to Orcelin`s(SP?)& got something that said aquatic glycophosate(spelling again?) Advice Please....I`ll try to attach a couple pix too.....Thank you in advance....Gilbert in Il.

i use plain ole 24d mixed with dawn dish soap...if you got a pond full, don't spray the whole thing at once or you'll kill all your fish...rotting vegetation takes oxygen out of the water...do about a third at a time spaced 3 weeks apart.

You could use a pond rake, attach it to a tractor or 4 wheeler to pull out the weeds,Use the boat to take the rake out and pull it back to shore full of lily pads and weeds.

If the ponds deep enough for fish, it's deep enough to drown. Where's the life jacket? People have drowned in a lot less water.

RIGHT ON!!!! People have drowned in their bathtub. I usually shower rather than sit in a tub, but when I do get in the tub, I always wear a life jacket. Good grief........

Uh, for all you know, she could be an excellent swimmer. And the water that close to shore may be only a foot or 2 deep. Also, what would be the difference if she had on a bathing suit and was going to go swimming? Are you saying she should wear a PFD then?

I agree with thurlow: Good grief!

There are several aquatic vegetation cutters on the market, are relatively cheap, and work great without putting chemicals in your pond. I buy most of my commercial aquatic equipment from a supplier in Arkansas, however, the weed cutter I chose came from a specialty aquatic weed control vender on E-Bay for around $100.00. Actually, a few weeds growing in the pond will give minnows and small fish a place to hide and keep the food supply in balance.
You had 2 good pieces of advice - only cut a portion of the pond at once because the decaying vegetation does use up oxygen. Also, having a life jacket or boat cushion available is a basic (for most people).

Try sea horses  They'll eat it...

Would grass carp help with lillies?. I wouldn't use chemicals, Maybe one of them rakes that you throw out and pull in. Once a year should take care of you. The girls could handle that by themselves. If they don't drown from not wearing a lifejacket
Do you have snapping turtles in there also???

Jig?

I'm kind of leaning towards a mechanical fix. If you could rig up something to drag across the pond to extract the lilly pads, you'd sort of be making "casting lanes". Might be some pretty good fishin'.

Maybe I need another cup of coffee.

gilbert, i think if you sprayed to kill it, you would have too much rotting debris on the bottom. it will deplete the oxygen in the water and you would have a pretty major fish kill. i agree with some of the opther posters, rig up something to pull the lily pads out. a section of a an old spike tooth harrow or maybe a section of a spring tooth harrow, and drag the stuff out with a tractor. some wire rope (old tow truck winch cable) would be the ticket.

Throw in some gold fish or grass carp. The gold fish will cost you a lot less since you can buy them as bait fish and they eat stuff like that

Yes Sir, dhamps10. We`re just south of you in Wayne co. And I did a bad job at spelling Orscheln. For those that don`t know, its about like a Rural King. Their prices seem(to me) to be a little more inflated than, but it beats the extra mileage to Effingham.
To the others, No more boat launch `til the jackets are found...

And Thank you to those that gave us ideas & websites/reading material!!!

Bcnt is right but I would only do about 20% at a time. Also the higher the water temp. the more susceptible you will be to a fish kill.. Too many dead plants will start a fish kill. This will compound the deoxygenation and you'll have a stinkhole of deadfish. You need a spray on weedkiller like Rodeo and a surfectant to facilitate adhesion. Grass carp do not eat American Lotus. Those pills and such are going to be cost prohibitive. Copper sulphate is for moss and such not American Lotus. Be careful how much you kill at one time. By the way the fish thrive in those lotus. Less Lotus = less fishing!

Thanks Bill, I was kind`a thinking a 1/3 of the pond. About 4 years back, I got some stuff at wally or it might have been ace, anyway it was a copper/cupperic purple liquid. Yep, sprayed the whole pond....& lost a few fish, the bigger 1`s in fact. Learned my lesson...But, Thank you for the info & guidance!!!
Now kruser, shoot..I`ve been read`n you & glensters post.....since I was a wee tadpole YT`er....LOL...get the pond-pun! I knew you guys were up round Peoria....Farmington`s close to? The reason why I asked, I`m a semi-retired guitar picker, & I got "turned on" to some Pork & the havanah ducks....Killer band....Krobar can pick!!! NOT that Allan can`t!!!!
Just wondered if you knew/heard them in their day?

Once again, just want to Thank folks for their replies!!! Gilbert
