Oliver 1650 - left brake

Figured a new disc but what is under the cover I might run into?

Pedals locked together only the right brake is doing the stopping/holding. Ain't so sweet on steep hillside.

Along with something wrong inside the drum, have you tried adjusting the left brake? Flip the connecter out of the way, and push each pedal down by hand. Do the two pedals bottom out at about
the same level, or does the left pedal go much lower? If it does, try adjusting that pedal. There is a threaded rod coming out of the bottom of the brake drum, with two nuts, one a lock nut. If
everything is working inside the drum, tightening the inside nut increases engagement and raises the brake pedal. See if you can get the pedals roughly even before you connect them, and then
try the brakes.

Thank you....

Pedals are way out of being equal. Left goes almost to the floor - still holds but not when connected to right pedal. Pretty steep hill and when backing down I apply brakes and front of tractor wants to slip to the left - okay, right brake doing the braking.

I'll try adjusting but just seems it needs new brakes/discs. Tractor is a 1964 model - 59 years old.

Check the linkages while you're in there. They can wear or stretch or the pins can go. Smitty has the pins. This is how my 1550 came.

I'll check everything. Not supposed to be hot today. I think forecast has 78. Been in the 90s seems forever.

Mercy. Down knees. Just got my head between the tire and battery box. Couldn't get in far enough to see top left bolt of the cover.
The only way to get pull the cover is to crawl under, sit up with back against tire so to remove the bolts. I'll wait for a better day. Has some sort of hose hanger on bottom bolt and no hose near it.

Before you go to all the bother of taking that cover off, tighten up the adjuster nut until both pedals are equal.

If you do have to take it off, tip the battery out, take off the terminals and slide the battery box out and off.

Well, I was sort of wanting to see just how badly the discs were wore down.

Taking the battery out is close to an arm breaking experience. The box side pins do not sit down in the "hooks" like they should. Okay, the pins on the bottom of the box are too far up. Undo the hooks and box falls out.
I can probably take a picture. Bought the battery box and hook bolts here.

As said, it's easy enough to get the box out of the way.

See my reply above about the battery box.

When waiting for the new battery box I fitted oak 1" X 10" board between the hooks for the battery box - used a hammer to drive it. Then used baling wire from top plate, around the board and back up the top plate. This helped support the battery mounted on the board. Easy to slip battery in and out.
Got the new battery box and had it painted green. I had a heck of time getting the battery box up and in place.

While I'm thinking about it I'm going to try to get picture of the gap between the bottom of the hook and pin.

Okay, battery box is sitting all the way down - metal to metal in the corners - just the way it fits. I didn't clean off the dead leaves.

Box all the way down and here's the rocker pin a 1/4" from bottoming out.
Undo the hooks the keep the battery box up in place and it all comes out - battery and box and they just don't come out, they fall out right now - fast

Think I used a 6X8 for ground support and a long 2X2 to hold battery and box in place so I could tighten the 2 hook bolts. And hook bolts are overly long and double nutted. So added burden...

Sister down loaded a video, tear down, inspection, and back together. He made the adjustments also and did test hop.

The thing is, the discs seem two sided. Okay, if wore on one side you can flip to the unused side?

While your in there just put new ones in it. Do it right.

If designed to use both sides, then flipping them over to use the unused sides would be the right way. Why waste 2 perfectly good sides?

Because if it's working right, you should be using both sides of both disks.

And since you have it open and find it burdensome to remove the battery box, at less than $20 per disc it's a no brainer decision.

The video is deceiving. It shows the inner disc and nothing between it and the tractor. It shows the outer disc and then the cover is put on.....

I can't find a exploded view of the brakes so to see what is touching the outsides of both discs.

The battery box is not just burdensome. It's dangerous. See pic above. The box doesn't pivot and hold. As soon as the hook bolts are removed it falls. So one hand to support the box while the bolts are removed. Bolts removed awkward is moving and positioning the support hand and getting the getting the hand in position to catch the box.

The video showed that he had removed the battery box before removing the cover.

Like noted in my above reply, the video is deceiving. Noted in the video was the dealer price of $60 per. He then tells of the discs available on Amazon for less than $20.00.
