Super 55 Low Engine Oil Pressure

The Oliver Super 55 (s/n 23 490-518) that I acquired a few years ago has always had, based on the color-coded pressure gauge, low engine oil pressure. As I began changing the engine oil yesterday, I noted that the parts manual for an Oliver 66 shows a small diameter filter tube and a restriction orifice in the aluminum filter mount. Also, some vague references to this tube and disc are made in some old posts on this forum.

The filter tube and orifice disc are not present on my 55. Should my 55 have this filter tube and the restriction orifice??? If so, does anyone know the diameter of the orifice and the thickness of the disc?? The info for the Oliver 66 indicates a tube length of 2-1/8 is that correct?? Am I going to get into engine lube trouble if I add a restriction orifice??

Ive included a photo of the existing aluminum filter mounting bracket and a cut of the filter mount associated with an Oliver 66 with part numbers 94 and 97 highlighted.

It's a bypass filter. Oil is dumped back into the crankcase.

Without the disk you will have low oil pressure.

If you make one, close one end and drill the orifice. I think I drilled one around 1/16 but it's been a while.

After reviewing the somewhat limited information available on this and other forums, I decided to make my own oil filter inlet tube.

Using a short length of 1/4 OD steel fuel line I made the tube shown in the following diagram. The tube easily fit into the existing aluminum oil filter mount with a light snug fit. Without the tube, the oil pressure gauge ran in the middle of the red low zone, but with the tube installed and drilled with a #42 bit for a restriction orifice, the oil pressure gauge now runs in the lower portion of the black working range with the engine warm.

In hindsight, I should have listened to RWTs advice and drilled a smaller orifice hole, perhaps between 1/16 to #47. Next time I change the oil filter I may pull out the tube and resize the orifice.
