1850 pto questions

Currently have a 1850 runs well recent overhaul perkins so anticipate many years of service ... The question is can the pto be changed as some tractors to 1000 rpm and if so where could i locate the shaft - gears ?

Look down to the right, below the PTO shaft. Is there a rod, about 7/8 diameter with a 3/8 threaded hole in it, sticking out about an inch? There should be a set screw threaded up from under it in the housing. If so, it has 1000 PTO. You shift it by pushing that rod in flush. (Or pulling it out, I forget which position is which)

A good Oliver parts yard should have a 1000 shaft. It'll just be a short shaft and bearing. They're still available new. I bought a White 2-105 from the AGCO dealer six or seven years ago. It had a 1000 in it. I asked if they had the 540. The owner went behind the parts counter and got a brand new one off the shelf and handed it to me. They're the same thing. I broke the 540 in my 1850 one time. A parts yard had one that time, so I went and picked it up.

Short story is yes. there is a small bolt located on the lower part of the PTO case that shifts PTO to 1000. The shaft pops out after removal of a retainer clip and the new shaft slides right in. Or I guess you could also use a spline adaptor 540 to 1000. Its detailed in the service manual which is a must have for everyone who owns an old tractor.

Just to be clear, not all tractors had the two speed PTO, I believe it was an option. I have attached a link to a youtube video by Chris Losey that explains how to change the PTO speed.
