I have an 1850 Perkins with a broken crank, I have found a Perkins from a MF 510 combine. What has to be changed to put the 510 engine into the 1850?

Thanks
Rich

I think that 510 would be about the right age to be an easy swap. No matter which combine engine you use, you'll have to pretty much strip it down to the block and head. You have to use the tractor front cover, pan, water pump, oil pump and plumbing, oil filter base, tappet cover, rear side cover, injector lines and linkages on the injector pump, intake and exhaust manifolds. Where you take the oil filter base off the combine engine, you'll need a pipe plug and a soft plug to plug up the holes that are left. Just to be safe, check the bolt pattern for the manifold bolts. I think you'll be OK. Some are horizontal, some are diagonal. I think the difference is whether or not they have a turbo. Neither of those should have one, so they should be the same.

Just a tip, put bolts with some kind of sealer in the holes where the combine motor mount bolts were. I used an engine out of a White 8700 in mine. When I started it up, it was leaking oil out of some of those bolt holes and I couldn't get to them with the frame in the way, so I had to lift the engine back up.

Thanks for the help, I am going to take a look at the engine this week and go from there. The one unfortunate thing is the aluminum oil pan was dropped and a chunk broke out of it.

The aluminum pan from the tractor? The length will be different for the combine pan most likely. You have to use the tractor front cover for the front motor mount and that requires using the tractor pan. I don't know if the curve in the combine pan would even fit the tractor frame.

If it's the tractor pan, can it be welded back in, or patched up?

beware oliver used cranks with 6 unevenly spaced holes to hold flywheel on, MF used 6 EVENLY spaced holes to hold their flywheel on. lesson learned the hard way to time motor.

Good tip on the flywheel, we have another 1850 with a Perkins, the flywheel is not timed to the crankshaft but I think a combine engine has been installed.

When I swapped my 1850 from the original 354 to the combine 372 the flywheel bolted right on without any issues.
