young tractor

Hi guys. I have a few questions for you. I have an 1850
diesel with a broken crankshaft. It broke on the front journal
right behind the gear on the crankshaft. The motor ran
great. The only reason I dropped the oil pan was because
the front harmonic balancer was wobbly and would move in
and out more than I was comfortable with. I initially was
going to look at the thrust washers, but obviously I found
the problem. The harmonic balancer looks good and isnt
falling apart or anything. This tractor was overheated and
then overhauled by a really good mechanic several years
before I bought it. It now probably only has 500 hours since
the overhaul. My question is what would cause the
crankshaft to break? I found a crankshaft with matching
numbers and am having it shipped here. Im then taking it to
a machine shop to have it checked. What else do I need to
check while Im at it. Im replacing the main and rod
bearings and seals while Im doing it too. I havent pulled
the engine as Im waiting to make sure the crankshaft is
good thanks for any advice.
