what is the correct wiring on the exciter connection. mine only charges with a constant 12v going to it. i thought it was just a momentary 12v applied and it started charging after that. there is no ammeter or dummy light in the system

irst thing to check in your case is the diode trio, as it supplied excite current after the initial external excite goes away.
