Front distributor housing

As long as you don't paint the area on the back side of it where it bolts on you will be just fine. So yes it has to have a good ground

Clean the paint on the side that sits on the engine side of it and you should be just fine

A gasket goes in-between the distributor and engine.
Paint on the face makes no difference whatsoever.
The distributor is grounded by the bolts.
SEE!!! I do know it all!

xactly, Harry! I think it would be difficult to isolate it from ground, considering drive, bolts, and all.

Do not paint the inside. The unit requires the base adjustment plate and spring for ground contact. FORD offered a cast iron front distributor in '43 as an option, due to WWII rationing of aluminum, but it was soon obsolete. Some were painted. Cast iron will oxidize, aluminum won't so much.
