1949 Z-Moline?

Hello! My dad farmed as a boy on my grandfather's farm. He's told me lots of stories about his Z-Moline that he used to drive. My dad was born in 1949, the year the Z-Moline was introduced, if my research is accurate. I have a dream of buying a 1949 Z-Moline and restoring it with my dad, while his health is good. It would be a delight to share that experience with my dad, and it would be a way of retaining my dad's legacy of farming, hard work, and family values when he is gone. I thought this might be a good place to inquire if anyone has any a lead for a restorable 1949 Z-Moline. Google searches I've performed in the past usually lead me to tractors that were already sold at auction 2 years ago or more. I'm in Iowa, but willing to travel. :) Thanks!

I'm not absolutely fixed on a '49. It sure would be a nice poetic fit, though! If I could restore a tractor from the year my dad was born, my next goal would be to restore a tractor from the year I was born (1971) - maybe an Allis Chalmers 185, since my maternal grandfather owned one of those that I can remember riding in as a little guy - so many good memories from the farm! Since it's likely that my dad's dad's Z-Moline was not a '49, I'd definitely consider a newer year. It's most important to me that it resembles the tractor my dad remembers as a boy. Narrow front axle is a must have.

MM Z series tractors were introduced in late 1930's and came in 2 styles. The early Z series was distinguished with it's Red Nose grille. It slanted slightly from top down to front and had a red insert. Model designation was ZTU, ZTN, ZTS ZT was Z model tractor, U was universal 2 wheel narrow front end, N was one wheel front end, and S was Standard or fixed axle wide front. They had 6 digit serial numbers

Style changed in about 1949 to one with a vertical grill painted Prairie Gold like the tractor. They were designated ZAU, ZAN, ZAS and ZAE E was an adjustable or extendable wide front end.

You are probably looking for a ZAU Serial number would start with 006 and then 49 plus 5 digits. 50 plus 5 would be a 1959 006 plus 5 digits would be a 51 or 52.
