Cetane in diesel fuel

Some mechanics suggest to put cetane additive at recomended quantity
in diesel fuel for old tractors as MF-65 MF-50 etc especially in winter.
It is supposed to help starting lubricating injection components
and enhance engine performance.
What do you think ?

1 man's opinion: Cetane- (burn rate diesel) you should be a ok. BUT look into an ANTI WATER / ANTI GEl additive for water in the winter and some lube (light oil, trade marked, tranny oil et cetera) to keep fuel pump happy year round.
 
Cetane additives will have little to no positive impact on an old school diesel engine, the compression ratio and the advance angle are not sufficient to need higher Cetane. Good clean diesel with good clean filters is more important than any additive. If I was going to add something it would be a good water separator that also had a filter element of nominal 10 micron or better.
 
I just use Howe's Diesel treat all year around and don't worry about adding anything else. Can gets empty I dump a little Howe's in the can and go fill it up at the station. I figure it is cheap insurance to make sure nothing gels and the pump stays happy with lubrication. There are other similar to Howe's treatments available.
