MF 40 transmission getting hot

Ive got a Massey Ferguson MF40 industrial tractor / loader that Ive been working on for over a year now. Its got a Perkins gas motor and manual shuttle shift transmission. After much work, I finally got a chance to try out the tractor this weekend for about 2hrs, which is the longest Ive run the tractor since Ive owned it. The transmission got really hot to the touch. Im not sure if this is normal. I suspect it isnt. I checked the fluid level and it was only slightly low. Any ideas on what else I can check or look at?

Good day Landlover:

Very few humans can hold their bare hand (say for three minutes) on a casing if casting is 130 deg F.

Definitely check Casting / oil Temp with other than your bare hand.

I dont have a temp. Gauge for the transmission. It was hot enough for spit to sizzle. I imagine being a little warm or hot is normal, but there was light smoke coming off of the top of the tranny where the gearshift is and it was looked like it was vaporizing the gear oil a bit and made the outside of the tranny slick with oil.

I assume it has a normal foot clutch. On level hard surface such as a road when you push in the clutch does it stop nearly immediately like a brake is dragging? If so this could indicate some part of the transmission is dragging or is in a bind, lacks proper clearance. Does it have a 3 point? If so the raise lower lever could be too far back. This places the 3 point in constant pump and will heat up the fluid. Try moving it about a 3/4 inch from its stop. If either of the two above are not the problem start it up after setting overnight. Check out areas of hydraulic pipes and hoses that can be checked for warmth, survey ahead of time so you can quickly move around feeling for some heat building. Do you hear any hissing sounds like fluid moving through something under pressure. What parts of the tractor have you worked on?

Are hydraulics work normaly... it may be hydraulic fluid dead end causing the
releif valve to be open all the time.

That machine is similar to mine. I have rounded rear fenders though. I will have to check out the fluid return line. Thanks for the info.

I was refering to the 3 point hitch hydraulic system (if it has one)
Happen when there is a diverter valve (if it has one) oriented to a closed outlet.
