Hydraulic relief valve

Hey guys , so winters here and my pump does not like the cold . When its warm it works awesome but when its below -15 I have to wait and run the pto for 30 minutes before I can use the 3pth or my plow.

Ive come across videos of people replacing their relief valve with a MODIFIED relief valve too accommodate nee oils, would this help me in any way with cold fluid or should I try a block heater on the externals of the tractor sump too get heat in it. When the fluid gets heated all my hydraulics work fantastic and it holds my implements in the air for week or two before it drops down so it retains pressure.

Thank you!

I would be leery of modifying a relief valve. I work in customer service for an ag manufacturer, when I get asked about hydraulic parts that split open, my first question is what did you do the relief valve?

It would help if you told us what tractor you are working with. The manual would likely have a listing of various weight oils and their suitable temperature range. There are multi viscosity oils available today that were not available when your tractor was built. We may be able to help you choose an oil that is suitable for all seasons.

Hi sorry its a 1962-1963 mf202 workbull.

No I wouldnt modify it, thats what the part is called modified hydraulic relief valve which accommodates nowadays oil

Currently I use a John Deere utf that has the mf1110 spec . Its either that or Klondike from piston ring that have the spec thats all I found.

Id love a thinner oil that doesnt destroy the yellow bushings material. I hear engine oil is safe but is it really?

Again no issues with hydraulics as once it warms up and gets a prime I can lift the tractor with the plow or a rear implement and hold pressure. Just for the first 39 minutes I need to run pto and drive around till it gets warmed otherwise no hydraulics work.

This spring I plan on getting a mf200 loader I found and use the external hydraulic pump too power that and rear hydraulics as well as replumb the hydraulic cover too run the 3pth off the test port of the external pump and just leave the internal pump for pto only unless I can find a solution for our -40 Canadian winters

Low viscosity Hygard or a winter UTF is what I would be looking for. Modern UTF fluid is about equivalent to 10w-30. The original UTF was thinner. The advent of CVT transmissions caused the manufacturers to go to a heavier oil. If you check the specs on winter UTF, it meets the older manufacturer oil specs but not the current ones.

Another option would be a silicone pad heater on the transmission.
