135 AG3 Starter

Can you replace a Perkins AG3 starter with one off a AD3 I know the part numbers are different, but it looks like the diesel one is more powerful because it has a longer armature?

Probably not, diesel flywheel ring gears are USUALLY different from the gas ring gear. The starter drive USUALLY has a different tooth count also. Best check the parts
list to see if the flywheel gears are the same.

The Perkins gas, and diesel 3.152's all use the same ring gear. I don't see why a diesel starter wouldn't work on a gas unless they put the ring gear in a different spot on the flywheel. You can compare the gas/diesel starters looking at how the nose cone/starter drive is located bewteen the two.

This may not help but, my dad had replaced the diesel starter on one of his 65s with a starter for the gas version. It worked; however, it was kind of a warm weather stater. I acquired a diesel starter from a salvage yard, and it started much better.

I just got my AG3-152 1969 MF 135 starter rebuilt yesterday. I asked Alex the same question. He says he couldn't tell if a starter like mine was a diesel or a gas. He says they are the same as far as parts and to rebuild. He says they always have different part numbers....sometimes that is necessary but it is also a way to sell more parts!!! A rebuild by a good shop is much cheaper. My bill was $43.00 and some change. It was my solenoid. He broke down my starter and trued it up and shined it up and sprayed the coating on the armature. Compare to the internet price of $190 for one that has had the same thing done more or less, and don't forget about the cheap spray paint. So if I were you I would find a GOOD HONEST shop that will rebuild it for you.

I'm Boowah in South Ga.,
and that's the way it is !
