TSX245 strainer drain on a 47 JD M

Ive ordered the Strainer drain from Roberts Carb to install in the TSX 245 carb. But there is a metal piece in the location with a hole in it. Is it an old retainer? Should I pry it out? Drill it out? What should I do.? Please take a look at the picture perhaps that will help.

The older versions had a wad of ''horsehair'' held in place with a ''washer'' that was staked in place, the later ones used a sintered bronze disc that was used without a washer. I ASSUME have the sintered bronze disc and are trying to replace the earlier ''horsehair'' filter with it. IIRC, this will take some drilling/modification if the carb body (IF it doesn't fit in the hole after removal of the retainer washer, IF present). I would give the seller a call to find out what, exactly they suggest before proceeding and doing some drilling you may regret.

If you can catch the edge of the washer from the other side with a pin punch just tap it out. Don't know if you can pry it out or not but be careful if you try. The alternative is careful grinding with a dremel or taking it to someone with a milling machine. Mine had the bronze plug to start with.

Ill call Roberts, see what they say. I can also Wait and see the size of the filter maybe it will be an option, or just leave it as it is. Thanks for the feed back though. Its important to have someone how know the history.

So to finish this thread let me show what I learned so if some in the future is faced with the same challenge , maybe this will help. The metal disc that covers to old horse hair strainer on the TSX 245 carb can be removed. Using a tap thread through the hole and scre in a screw then work it out. See the the picture. Then insert the new filter.
