Top pic is what it sounds like he has. Loosen the hex nut and tap on the end of the heater element.
Buy a nut to screw onto the end of the heater. The one shown is the wrong thread pitch but you get the idea. Thread a four or five inch bolt into the nut and work it back and forth. A little persuasion with a hammer might be needed.
Last pic is the o ring that seals the plug. You can see how it is squeezed between the two halves of the plug.
The hole in my block was a little rough so I added rtv to the repair. So far so good

I will try that before i try to install a tank heater. I have not been able to work on it. Spent
thanksgiving in hospital removing a big kidney stone. After i get stent out and back on my feet
i will try that thanks again for your help.

I paid a mechanic who had done it before help me get it out. I thought sure the green disc must be threaded in the hole but no. The hole in the block is smooth and literally the only thing holding it in is the o ring pressing out against it.
