Good afternoon everyone. I recently purchased a John Deere 317 lawn tractor. I believe it has the 17 horsepower Onan engine in it. Great machine so far. I am trying to figure out what kind of engine oil drain plug is in this block? It is not a regular oil drain plug. Does anyone know what the original oil drain plug size is as far as thread size? I want to replace the strange plug that is currently in it. I have never seen such a weird oil plug before. I appreciate your help. Thank you. Kow Farmer

I can't help with the drain plug size, but some info that might be helpful in case you didn't know already. The 317 originally had a Kohler KT17 engine that was known for problems, and later corrected and became the KT17 series 2. Deere did offer an Onan P218 engine as a replacement. So that may be the engine you have in it now. Hope this may help!

Since there were two versions of the original Kohler engine and a kit to put and Onan in a photo of the engine and the ''weird'' oil drain plug would go a long way into putting the mystery to rest here.
