We have an Ingersoll Rand [case 24]with a Kholer engine 14hp., with starter / generator.

When turning key to start position; turn engine over several times then release key to run position >>>then it fires <<.
Where have I gone wrong in re wiring//or is the switch possibly not working right.
>>>> Further to this, I have discovered that if I set switch to ON position and cross the heavy poles on the starter solenoid the engine turns over and fires as it should and starts.
Any suggestions or thoughts or directives would be appreciated.
