Case 224 Garden trac key switch

We have an Ingersoll Rand [case 24]with a Kholer engine 14hp., with starter / generator.
>>>>>Key switch difficulty-<<<<
When turning key to start position; turn engine over several times then release key to run position >>>then it fires <<.
Where have I gone wrong in re wiring//or is the switch possibly not working right.
>>>> Further to this, I have discovered that if I set switch to ON position and cross the heavy poles on the starter solenoid the engine turns over and fires as it should and starts.
Any suggestions or thoughts or directives would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Wm.

Sounds like you may have the wrong ignition switch (there are many versions of garden tractor ignition switches that LOOK the same but have different internal switching functions).

Alternately, if the switch you have has both an ''Ignition'' and an ''ACCessory'' terminal and you are powering the ignition system from the ACCessory terminal which does not get power during cranking it will act as you describe.

Thank you worn out.
I will go over the wiring ad switch later this week. Thank you for the directives to check no.

Yep, sounds like for current to the coil when switch is in start position. If that's the case it also probably has a 'm' terminal for magneto kill wire. Best to source one from a Case/Ingersoll (no Rand in the name) parts dealer. https://salempwr.com/ is one I've dealt with. Online catalog and ordering, just be sure to get the serial number off the tractor as the switches changed a few times.
