PowerMore Engines?

Ive never heard or seen one of these engines before today 420CC.

A friend brought me a MTD lawn tractor. Said it quit and he couldn't get it started. It started right up for me but is blowing oil out the crankcase vent
into the air intake like crazy.

mtd, now stanley/black/decker. spin off of another engine. just retired from this stuff too. lol
they use troybilt p/n's. but could be anybodys. you need a crystal ball to keep up with the changes.

but wait...there will be more.....

Is there gas in the oil? If so, the needle valve has failed to hold the gas back while it was sitting around.

Can you see dirt in the intake beyond the air filter? Bad rings will cause it to blow oil through the crankcase breather into the carburetor. Dirt is murder to piston rings.

Did the customer change their own oil and use the same really thin oil they use in their car? Needs to be 30wt or 10w30 0r 10w40. None of that 0wXX stuff.

Does it have a blown head gasket?

MTD is pretty good about providing manual's ,
From the internet,

MTD has successfully entered into a joint venture with a major Asian manufacturing company, whereby both companies have collaborated their engineering, design and manufacturing expertise to produce a high end overhead valve (OHV) engine.

These engines will be exclusively distributed and serviced by MTD under the Powermore engine brand. Powermore engines are a premium small block engine with advantages that in many cases are better than competitive engine models. Some of the premium features include:

Overhead Valves (OHV)
Cast iron cylinder sleeve
Dual element air cleaner
Low tone muffler
Ball-bearing supported crank shaft
Large fuel tank capacity.

It was very low on oil when they brought it to me. I added some. Tag on top of engine states 10w-30 oil that's what I put in it. Below the air filter the tube to the carb is full of black greasy residue.
The engine runs better under a load. To me seems short on power. When idling engine seems to cutout. I removed the breather hose from air cleaner while running. Fair amount of oil sprays out and some smoke. I removed the dip stick and couldn't see any smoke coming out. Oil is very dirty.

One of the best mowers I've owned was a 12hp Kohler K301, Cub Cadet 129 with a 48 deck. Won't serve well as a brush hog but on lawns it's fine.

Since the 90's they've been using larger engines on the same old mower just to increase sales. The real bottleneck is the mower missing grass if going too fast. Time mowing with my 70's 10hp was the same as the newer 18hp.

Start the engine and remove the oil filler cap. If you have a lot of oil blowing out of the filler tube and the crank case vent.

Be a good bet that the head gasket is blown.

I have several 12 horse Kohlers in Cub Cadets that run 42 inch decks just fine. Also my Cub Cadet 70 with the 7 hp Kohler will run a 38 inch deck all day.
