Fifth season for me and around 280 hours on the clock. This season it sounds different. Kind of a klunk-knunk on startup and under load when mowing heavy grass. Seems to be a little low on power and using more gas. Bought new, oil and filter change every 50 hours. Plugs are clean and perfect color on the electrodes, it just sounds different. Any opinions what to look for.

What is your compression? What are the chances something like a bad idler Is causing the noise and robbing power? Even in a homeowner grade unit, 280 hrs. seems awfully low for an engine failure.

Bad idler? You mean on the mower deck or engine? My hearing is really bad so I have a hard time picking up mechanical sounds. I have full earmold hearing aids and shut them off when I mow to block most of the noise. I'm getting the klunking noise under load.

Not a Husky mower, but my Bolens was clunking ...louder under load, and and it was a worn bushing on the mower belt drive by the PTO clutch

Leave the hood up (or off) and start it. I bet the engine is loose in the frame. If it is, it will jump around for a second or two before the engine gets up to speed.

I think all Kohlers sound that way! Our Husqvarna with a Kawasaki started sounding like an old John Deere, and had similar symptoms as yours, discovered I hadn't changed the air filter in 650 hours! Good thing we have pretty clean air in MN, but not so much anymore.

Checked it yesterday. The engine isn't loose but I heard the klunk on start-up and when I throttled up but no noise after the RPM picked up. I think it's the nature of the beast. Maybe just me thhnking it never did it before.
