M129 Kohler

I just aquired another Wheel Horse tractor,a 312.Modern to me.I was looking at the engine tag and it says,M129.I was
recording all the numbers in my Wheelhorse book for when I call around for parts.I was trying to tell somebody it is
a M129,and he said there is no such thing,it has to be an M12.That 9 has a scratch through it,but the top is pretty
clear. It is there.Do I have a misprinted tag? (NOT the first time)or does the guy I talked to not know what he is
talking about.It is a Magnum 12 engine.

Is there any chance that 9 is actually an 'S'? it is very common for Kohler to have an 's' after the model number.

(As far as I know, the 'S' just stands for special. Meaning, I think, that that particular spec. number was uniquely intended for a particular OEM. )

There is a very good chance of that. There is a diagonal scratch from a screwdriver going through that digit, and the scratch is so clean and angled it stands a 50-50 chance of it being a 9 or an s.This is my first experience with a magnum motor, all my older Wheelhorses have the K series in then.I have a 73 12 automatic thats been here since new,a 73 14 automatic, and a 75 C-160 standard trans.

I would also think it is a M12S. TractorData shows a switch between the K301S series and the M12S in the 1987 model year for the 312-8 tractor. I'm not a Wheel Horse person, but own several Gravely tractors from that era. Gravely used an M18 engine in it's G16 tractor in about 1987. I have read that they specified some minor modifications to the 18 hp engine so that it only put out 16 hp. I suppose there may have been minor changes to the carburetor or governor settings.

I had a Wheel Horse 312, and the engine was a Kohler M12.
It's a K301 only with electronic ignition and newer style sheet metal.
