LA140 Problem

I bought a JD model LA140 at a good price and had to fix the steering but got the new steering gear on ok but now for some reason after its ran a few minutes it won't start back, i checked the fire and it was good, i'm thinking carburetor?? I removed the fuel hoses from the fuel pump and had a steady stream coming in and shooting out of it.

If it REALLY has a good, hot spark to both sparkplugs, yet doesn't start when warmed up the first thing I would wonder about is if the fuel cutoff solenoid under the carburetor float bowl is not opening.

That could be caused by an electrical problem in that it's not getting power, or that it's gummed up and sticks when warm, or perhaps could simply be faulty.

Hey wore out, i let the mower sit over night and it wouldn't start today, might put a new carb on it and see how things are then, JD wanted nearly as
much for the solenoid as a replacement carb. Amazon carbs are a good price and so far i've had good luck with them.

Just take the solenoid off clean the tip and put it back on.I have one with a rubber tip,sooner or later it wont start. Take it out, wipe it off, and you're good to go for another 6 months.

Solenoid plunger was sticking on mine. Pull the Solenoid and spray it good with brake cleaner or carb cleaner while working the plunger.

Ok i'll try that and see how things go, I also need the plastic chute (Part # AUC11996) that mounts on the mowing deck, i don't want to sell this mower without one esp since your foot can go down through the hole in the deck. A good used one would work fine.

I am thinking on that model you can lock the brake pedal down and the engine can crank over with you off the seat.

Testing the fuel solenoid is pretty easy. Put your finger on it, listen with your ears. If you feel it move or hear it click, that is most likely not your problem. Unless there is trash in the jet.

Find the linkage under the carburetor that works the choke. It is an arm coming from the throttle quadrant that is about 3 long and it pushes upward on a rod. (The rod is on the left side when viewed from the front of the engine between the cylinders.) when you move the throttle on the console to 'choke' position. it will push the rod as far into the choke position as possible. Then put your finger under that arm and try pushing upward. If it goes upward anymore at all, the throttle cable coming from the console has slipped and will need to be adjusted.

I've had a similar problem with LA-135 and La-145 tractors with Briggs engines. Same as yours,the fuel pumps squirted gas but engine refused to fire unless I cranked a long time while choking. My solution was to drill a hole in filter cover the size of straw on carb cleaner and give it a single,short burst of cleaner then start on full choke. Started fine every time with a shot of cleaner. Later on when I emptied a Zoom Spout oil bottle,I filled bottle with gas and it worked equally well. Try removing filter and using starting fluid,gas or cleaner to see if that helps it start.
