super dexta

I have a 1962 super dexta, it is the blue and orange colours and has the lights mounted on the side of the nose cone. The question i have is this the right colour scheme and is the lights in the correct position. I am researching it and all 1962 models I can find are blue and white lavery with the lights within the grille. Which is correct, I have dated the tractor trough the serial number to be UK built on the 27th febuary 1962.
Can anyone tell me if the colour scheme I have is correct for this age of tractor and if the lights are in the correct positon as i want to return the tractor to origional condition when it retires shortly.

Thanks,
Niall.

Niall,
Curious how you were able to pinpoint the build date of your tractor to a specific day from the serial number? Have you come across a daily build list?
All information I have seen states Super Dexta's were not in production until late April/62 with serial number 09B 710530 and had the mechanical governed fuel pump.
If yours is a Super Dexta with an earlier serial number it is a very rare tractor.
Colours of Dexta's and Super Dexta's in UK supposedly changed to blue and grey (or white or creme) in June/63. Atleast some for export were painted grey a bit earlier (maybe March/63).
The headlights in the grill were the most common after they were introduced in about Nov/60 but the side mounted ones remained an option.
Would be great if you could post date codes and serial numbers of the engine and tractor.

Cheers, Les

The most acurate dating is obtained by the casting code numbers on the engine, clutch housing, and rear axle. These numbers give the date they were cast in the foundry.
These dates/code numbers will be very close to each other, often within 2/3 days.
Because production at Dagenham factory was so busy, the date of final assembly would be with 2/3 days of the castings.
For instance on my 1954 Major, the casting codes were all 28 & 30 March, so tractor assembled 1st week April which ties up with the serial number.

The later Ford 1000 series have serial number and date of build etched into casting which gives the date or build down to day or night shift!

The "blue grey" Super Major was sold as Ford 5000 and Super Dexta as Ford 2000 in the USA. The Dexta of that time was not sold in the USA.

Hello Les,

I dated the tractor using the serial numbers cast into the gearbox, back-end and engine castings, someone gave me a list that they printed out from the internet at a vintage rally last summer, they are really comprehensive and can zone down on a particular day in a particular month. I have the list at home still, I will drag it out and e-mail it to you if you give me your e-mail address.
Thanks for your help,
Niall.

Hi Niall,
That would be great if you could send the list of date codes and serial numbers!
My e-mail should be available by pressing the e-mail button at the bottom my post.
Thanks,
Les

Hi KDF68,
The "blue grey" Super Major was sold as Ford 5000 and Super Dexta as Ford 2000 in the USA. The Dexta of that time was not sold in the USA.
That's interesting! I wonder if any made it into Canada?
I had always wondered why Fordson continued with the Dexta in some markets after the Super Dexta was introduced when the engines were the only difference and close in power. Maybe had something to do with the Perkins contract for the number of "144 cubic inch" engines available?

Would you know if any Dextas were imported into the US after the Super Dexta came out but before the blue/grey models (April/62- May/63)?
And were there any blue/grey petrol or gas Dextas available in the US?
Thanks,
Les

Hello Les,

I am afarid you are asking the wrong person, we have had our Super dexta for a few years now, but it is only recently which I took an interest in cleaning her up a bit. I know mine is a blue and red/Orange colour and it was manufactured in the UK in 1962, but it has always spent its life in Ireland. I have heard that the super dexta was imported to the US and wa sold as "Super dexta" and Ford 2000, but I am unsure in what quantities.

Regards,
Niall.
