Hello! Hoping someone can help in simple terms for a novice tractor restorer. I own a 63 1/2 ford 2000 4cyl. I am trying to identify my generator terminals that are without markings. It has 3 prongs. One on the back and 2 on the outer case facing the dirt when mounted. These two have me confused?? One has a insulator mounted between the casing and the prong where as the other doesn't? Can anyone tell me which prong is which? Also, is this a b circuit system when I polarize it? I recently installed a new wiring harness and now know that I will have to polarize the generator and posssibly the voltage regulator. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was my grandfather's tractor and I would like to restore it myself within the next 6 months! Thanks again!

nsulated terminal on barrel is FIELD and other is case ground, and ARMATURE terminal is on rear end plate. Yes, "B" ckt.

man.. has there been a run on genny and vreg polarizing questions.. and field post identification issues since last thursday!.. :)

in't that the truth! 99.44% (like Ivory soap) never even need polarizing.

Thanks for your prompt reply, it is most helpful! I had not only recently changed the wiring harness, but the battery also. The diagram should definitly be helpful thanks! One last question, Does it really matter if the engine is running or not when I polarize it? I have read both ways, and will polarizing the generator also polarize the voltage regulator? THANKS AGAIN YOUR INFO WAS VERY HELPFUL!

I kinda guessed with the battery and wiring harness swap mine probably would. Not to mention after all parts swap I started it and let it run several minutes before all electrical activity crapped out! :? Guess a new voltage regulator is in my future?

ou polarize with engine stopped. You polarize a generator. You do not polarize a regulator (contrary to what someone named Dell keeps on saying). "All electrical activity stopped"..does not make sense,if you mean won't crank over engine with starter or ignition won't function, because even if you wired gen to reg wrong & burned up reg, the battery should still make all else run, just not charge. You may have other problems.

Thanks again! I was working thru a few carb issues and while it would run for a few seconds and shutdown, I was attempting to restart multiple times. On my last attempt it sounded like the starter didn't want to disengage and then my generator warning light went completely out and I lost all power. I am not positive but, I found water that appeared to be leaking from the battery. Not sure because tractor had been Gunked and rinsed earlier in the day and a slight possibility that it was just left over water. The battery is new and when I hooked up my meter afterwards it was reading 6.07volts. Other than these two wires which were backwards, I am almost 100% positive my harness is correct. This lead me to learning a little too late about polarizing. I am a car guy,but tractors are all new to me. :D

(quoted from post at 11:59:14 11/12/12) don't randomly replace stuff.. test first.. observe and report!
Thanks for advice. Most replacements have been necessary. This tractor had been sitting in a lean to for about 20yrs. Wiring insulation was cracked and exposed wires were brittle. This replacement was a gimmee :D . Gonna test vreg b4 replacing and will try once more.
