Hi Guys ... I just got a Ford Commander 6000 diesel ... Not exactly sure of year tho. Can anyone decipher these #'s for me? or let me know if there are other #'s on these tractors for indicating yr?
I've read up on all the negativity on these girls , but i got a good deal and it has the 3 pt hitch which my '65 case 830 doesnt. Has hydrolic issues and power steering leak, but a little TLC and i think it will be a good unit for the little use i will give it.
Guy i bought it from was told by another guy that it is a 69 - i havent found anything on the net but a picture labeled '69 commander to indicated they were even produced in '69 ....

Thanks

Thanks fellas .... I see other digits stamped as well .... i didnt have time to scrape away , but it looks like random #'s and letters punched in no order as well ..... what do the letters? mean?

We had a Commander 6000 as our primary work-horse tractor back in the early 70s. It did very well for us, primarily pulling a 4 14s mounted plow or a 5 14s semi-mounted, when we could borrow it, and disking / harrowing. Only problem we had was the seal between the rear end and the transmission leaking and fluid going from one to the other (forget which direction it went). It meant a trip to the dealer to split it and fix the seal. Otherwise the SOS was very solid and gave us no trouble. Frequent filter changes kept the fluids in good shape. Have good memories of me and my brother plowing many nights, him on a WD-45 and me on the Commander following each other up and down the fields with lights making us little glowing islands in a sea of darkness and mufflers glowing cherry red.

That third set of numbers should be what is called the production code, which will tell you exactly what day, month and year that it was assembled, even includes information on whether it was the day, afternoon or night shift that assembled it. It should be a number (last digit of year, in your case should be a 6 for 1966) followed by a letter (month A=Jan, B=Feb, etc, but skips I) followed by one or 2 more numbers (day of month) followed by a final letter (which shift).

Just out of curiosity, where are you? Seems like
I've seen this tractor before, probably on
Cragislist.
My Grandpa had a 6000 Commander set up similarly -
18.4x34's on manual adjust rims and the short-
wheelbase wide front (but no loader or wheel
weights.)

I'm in Medicine Hat ,Alberta and picked it up 5 hrs north in Vermillion Ab.

Thanks for the info Sean ... looks to be April 25th 1966 ....

I got the loader off. Now to hose off the years of grime and track down the leakes (power stering is the worst) and get a Manual so i can figure out which fluids go where..... and figure out how and if the brakes can be adjusted .... and if the hydrolic valve unit under the set can be fixed ... and on and on .... :)
