12V to 6V (Reducing)

or just $10 more, you can go to NAPA & get a proper 12v coil, IC-14SB, and be ahead of the game. Almost no seller ever correctly specifies the resistance of their "dropping" or "ballast" resistors and even if they did, would you know the characteristics of you coil necessary to choose the correct resistance? Not likely. Any dropping resistor/ballast resistor does NOT automatically drop from 12 to 6v.....voltage drop depends on amount of Ohms and amount of current flowing. So just get the IC-14SB and be done with it.

JMOR be patient with me if this is a crazy question but keep in mind I am totally inept when it comes to electrical details of autos/tractors. If I get a twelve volt coil then what does that mean for my points? How about my solenoid and other electrical components? Any other changes needed?

olenoid, starter, points, condenser, are all ok on either 6 or 12, but since you stated you are running a 12v battery, I 'assumed' that your charging system was either a 12v gen/V or a 12v alternator. If not then that is a whole 'nuther can of worms.
 

Nope it's the old six volt generator. Am I better off just buying a six volt battery and getting back to work?

gain, 'assuming' that the 6v gen/VR works, the 6v battery route will be least costly approach. Otherwise you will be buying a 12v gen/VR or a 12v alternator. If 6v you don't need that dropping resistor.
