28 vs. 24 in tires

I am wanting to know what models of tractor have the ford 8 bolt hub but are 24 in centers vs. 28 in. (ford, Massey, furgie, etc) I cannot find a good used 28in tire anywhere here and don't want to pay close to $400 each for new (tire plus install). I had 28's on but blew a tire this weekend, so the LCG tires are back on the tractor.

Can find lots of good used 24in tires. Since this is an LCG tractor, decided that I should take the advice and switch the 28's I have for 24's and not have to mess with the front stubby axle height.

Figure I will be money ahead to buy 24in centers and rims (used) and sell the 28in centers and rims I have - hopefully at a wash in price and pick up a good used set of 24in tires.

Common size 28" tires are much more common and considerably less expensive than the less common 24" (floatation) tires such as used on vintage Fords.

I would think that you would be much less likely to find decent used 24" tires.

everyone is trying to go away from 24" so it appears to be more availible because no one wants them. and if you need to buy NEW tires for them, you will pay more and have less choices if any at all..

as to short front spindles, you can buy the standard spindles used. You can even use the older models spindles on the newer tractors..

I have been wrong before, according to my wife.

Thanks for the reply Dean. That is not my findings in southern ill. Maybe they are from industrial tractors, or combines or such, but a local salvage dealer has 2-3 pair to choose from. Have also seen them on craigslist in the recent past.

One thing I need to also mention is that the gearing for 1st gear seems a bit tall. I recall that the pinion on the LCG is tuned for the smaller diameter tires. Running the 28's with my square baler, running in 1st, seems a bit fast. Have to hit the clutch more than I like or I choke the baler. Thinking the 24 in will slow me down some. Also, the geometry of the front spindles is not right with 28in, and swapping them out is also not cheap. so smaller on the back solves more problems than just obtaining good used tires.

One of the other regulars suggested this a while ago and it has been in the back of my mind since then.

Suppose I could sell this as an LCG and go buy a real AG model...nah... that would be too easy

The circumference difference between 13.6x28 and 14.9x24 tires is negligable so you will realize no noticeable speed difference.

I also expect that you will find 24" centers and decent 13" or 14" x 24 inch rims a bit hard to find.

I have a set of 14.9 by 28 tires that are used by still in real good
shape. I'm located in Bloomington, IN. If you're interested in
seeing them, let me know and I'll send you a few pictures. I'm
not asking much $ at all for them -- just really need to get them
out of the way for now.

As dean said.. the rims for the 24" tires are probably gaoon be the sticking point to find.

I have been able to find 24" centers that look to have come off a massey ferguson based ont he red/silver paint I saw on them.

I also have lucked up and twice now bought a set of older but serviceable turf tires already on 24" rims... both were at auction.. think I paid 150$ for a set of monster 16.9-24's.. one tire was virtually new.. the other maybee 60% and heavilly checked.. I stuck the new one on my naa, that already had 1 new 16.9, and 1 oh.. 40%.. so now I got a matched set of new on the naa, and a used 'spare' se that betweent he 2 of them are about 50% averaging.. :)

just got to keep your eyes out and buy when the time is right.

I got lucky last year and bought all the rims and rubber off a 8n that was being parted out. good 28" hat rims with serviceable but checked tires in the 60-70% range, and 2 16" rims.. one with minor rust.. one 90% tire.. one 70% with a small cut in the tread area.. used them as sapres for my 950 while I rehabbed the 14.9-28 rears on it.. heck.. left the fronts on as the fronts on the 950 were junk.. rims and the rubber..

Where are you located in So. Illinois?

I have a pair of 13.6 X 28s that I would get rid of.

one almost new one about 60 % They are on loop rims.

24" double bevel rims like my 841D was built with are nearly impossible to find used and so far as I know, not available new. 24" six loop rims with the appropriate centers (as found on a 3 cylinder 3400 & 3500) are more common. For instance, I have 12x24 6 loop rims in stock next to the 10x28's and 12x28's.
