12volt conversion

Two questions: first, Is there a way to use the diode in the field wire and also have a charge indicator light in the circuit? Second, can someone explain how the light prevents back flow of current to the alternator?

ont see why you can't use both (series them), but why would you do that? Either alone does the job of preventing the field supply circuit (diode trio) within the alternator from sourcing the ignition after key is turned off (you called back flow). How? The bulb is a very low current bulb, typically 2 or 3 tenths of an amp, and therefore cannot carry enough current to power the ignition.

As far as I know it is either the light or the diode. Shoot on my Super 88 Oliver there is a ballast resister in place of the light/diode and it works just fine. The light works as a small resister and that is why it works correctly. That by the way is in simple layman's terms.

I can grind your crank, but I'm not much good with the electrics. Looks like I'm not too good at posting in the right order either

I thought the idea was to keep current from flowing back into the alternator and smoking it. I figured the bulb was a path for current flow, and the diode would block that path. I also thought it over and wondered if the diode in series with the bulb would keep the light from burning at all. Hence my original question.

Years ago I could have used ohms law and E=MC (squared) etc etc to explain it but I got out of that stuff about 10 plus years ago and have never looked back.
As for the light yes you could use both in a series sort of wiring but if one of them went bad you will also not have a charging alternator

all the lamp does is provide a low wattage power to turn the alt on.. but no enough wattage for spark.. the lamp isolates the ignition from the alternator.. not the alternator FROM something else at shutdown. diode is just a 1-way electron valve.

Old,

I always enjoy your posts and you are on my list to visit when I get the chance. In-laws down around Table Rock and us up north, just have to jog east to see ya. I could be wrong, but I don't think the equation from Einstein's theory of Relativity is needed when it comes to tractor charging systems. :D :D

After 100 years and all the technology, all we can do is confirm what Einstein gave us in the early 1900s. I'm convinced God must have leaned down from heaven and whispered in his ear.

Have a great week.

Chris
