Mashbox,

Lead was used in many paints until the 70s I believe. I know our old (1904) house has multiple coats on it. I was told lead paint will chip off in small pieces, dry, crack etc. They paint over the old lead paint with elastomeric paints that help seal the old lead paint and include Bitrix, a bitter flavor so a child won't want to chew on it if it does chip off.

All that being said, pertaining to house paints, I have never heard of any autobody shops, etc. with special set ups to deal with lead. It would seem to me the govt. would be on the salvage yards if the old automotive paints contained lead as well. I'm sure someone here has the autobody, paint experience, they may enlighten us.

What an interesting question.

Lead was used in 2 important pigments: "White Lead" or lead carbonate (PbCO3) and "Chrome Yellow" or lead chromate (PbCrO4). Today Titanim Dioxide is the primary white pigment, but it has been around as an alternative to white lead for a long time. There is still not a yellow alternative to chrome yellow that is as color fast as the lead based pigment. Of course the lead based pigments did help prevent rot in wood by "poisoning" the surfaces in a way that no modern pigment duplicates either.

I don't think on Ford tractors we have anything to worry about with Chrome Yellow, but there could be white lead pigment in Ford gray.

Has anyone done a "lead test" on their tractor?

Inquiring minds want to know.

You folks are forgetting about RED lead pigment... not sure if Ford red circa 1954 had any in it, but Farmall red sure did! In fact, I bought a can of IH red IronGard at my CNH dealer as recently as four years ago that still was based on red lead (though the cans on the shelves now seem to have phased it out).
