A friend is going to sell a ford tractor and I am not to knowledgeable about tractor models.

This one is a 1949 with 3 speed trans. I believe that the serial is located on the left hand side of the engine block, is that right?

There are no running boards just pegs to rest your feet on. The brake peddles are on each side, the left one next to the clutch.

Access to the battery is on top but there is a small pan that needs to be liftted out up out of the way before you can get to the battery.
What model does my friend have?

Any help would sure be appreciated.
Thanks
Charlie

9N was made till 1942.

2N was made from 1942 through 1948

8Ns from 1948 through 1952.

8Ns were supposed to have a 4-speed transmission. But my understanding is that all the parts interchange, so someone could have bolted a 2N transmission on an 8N.

Why do you say it's a 1949? Because of the date stamped on the rear axle casting?

Check out this link: http://home.att.net/~jmsmith45/idhistory.htm lots of good info.

Sounds like your friend has the year wrong or at least partly wrong. 3 speed says its a 9N or 2N both as the other guy says made before 1949 so it could not be a 1949 but it could also be a mutt. A mutt is a tractor made from 2 or 3 others so it could have an 8N engine bolted up to a 2N or 9N rear end so then only parts of it would be a 1949 and other parts older

Ditto what the others said.. it's at least a 9n/2n chasie.. so 39-47.. engine may be from a later model 8n.. but they are all bolt up compatible.

In any case.. what do you want to know about it?

price ranges from 1000-3000$ depending on condition and location.

Soundguy I was just looking for the information to confirm that this is a 1949. From the info you fellows have given me it apparently is not a 1949 and that was entirely possible due to circumstances.
Thanks to all of you who posted a reply to my questions. It is very helpful.

It's entirely possible that the ENGINE is from a 1949 ford 8n.. however the chassie as you describe it MUST be from a 39-47 9n / 2n.

Double check the engine sn.. and then compair to casting date codes to try to get a date on the machine.. if the engine number and casting codes are all within a couple months.. it's likely an intact unit.. otherwise you can at least date the chassie.. and the engine seperately. Not to big a deal on parts though, as all the 9n/2n parts should interchange.. and the engine will only matter whether front mount or side mount for most of the internals.. etc.
