I have a TO-20 which runs but after working on the distributor it is now out of time. The engine will run and it sounds half way descent but while checking it with a timing light I found that the marks are not hitting where they should be. I have read the manual and it says to rotate the distributor until the marks hit where the are supposed to, but my question is, which way do you turn the dist. to the left or right and how much adjustment should it need. Thanks for the help.

Loosen the dist. just enough to hand turn it. You will see which way to turn it readily if you remove the dist. cap and watch the direction of the shaft when engaging the starter. Turning the dist. in the same direction as the rotation of the shaft retards timing and visa versa. While you're there you might check the play in the dist. shaft, excessive play will cause problems too.
