I have heard alot about fergies having cracked blocks. Mine is ok so far and I haven't had any problems with it. I would like to know why fergies have the tendency to crack their blocks

Dan, If yours is OK and you take care of it you should have no problems. Most problems with any I have worked on are because of poor or no maintanence,ie:

Not checking oil levels or repairing low oil pressure conditions.

Antifreeze, radiators, cooling levels, belt maintanence, occasional flushes, and hose condition.

Timing and carb adjustments are important too.

All help keeping engine temps within range.

We love'm but to some previous owners they just pushed them as long as they ran and the heck with tomorrow!

Just my thoughts,
Joe in NY

About low oil pressure problems:
My TO-20 has just started dropping in oil pressure. It stays around 22psi at idle but drops to almost 0psi when it is reved up. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem?

the blocks are very thin between the cylinders. overheating and lack of or not strong enough anti freeze mixture are the main causes of cracks.

Another cause of engine problems is attempting to run the engine fuel mixture too lean. H.Ferguson engines are designed to use the fuel mixture to aid in cooling by running a rich mixture. When at no load conditions, the engine appears and indeed is running too rich; but under load the engine benefits from the adjustment two ways. By the afore mentioned cooling effect for the combustion chamber while compensating for the power demand. Thats my understanding of the arrangement, and I agree with the post that poor/no maintanence creates most cracked blocks. Makes one wonder how long these tractors would last with proper maintanence from the beginning.

An old Ferguson Mechanic, viewed in these parts as the definitive Ferguson expert), told me that he thought you almost could't run one too hard and they were hard to overheat with regular use. He thought they crack because they get stored in freezing weather without the correct antifreeze mix.
