I have a rattling noise in the engine that seems to be from the middle/forward. As you give it more gas, it gets so loud that it sounds like it wants to bust. I have taken the engine apart 3 times and have done different work on it to eliminate this noise, and it's still there. I had a machine shop check the crankshaft. I've put a new block, new pistons, new rings, replaces bushings on the rods, new sleeves, new governer. I'm about to pull all my hair out. What could it be? Does anybody have any advice? Please help !!!

Is the crank pulley good and tight ? I had an engine with a loose bolt/ nut on the pully and with some play in the woodruf key it made a knocking noise.

Just a long shot - does the governor work? It's just chock full of little metal balls that might get hung up somewhere....

You say nothing about the rod and main bearing did you change them when you did all this work? It sounds like maybe crankshaft end play did you shim it to specs and was the block the type with the center shims or gear end shims? Mark H.

I think we have found the problem after working on it today. we took off the radiator, took off the front plate, and took the governor off. we put the pulley back on without the cover plate, and started the engine. Wanted to run it for a few seconds to see if we could tell where it was coming from. oil sprayed around the front of the tractor, but with the governor off we knew it wasn't that. We finally pinpointed that it was coming from the timing gears. You could here it plain as day right in front of you. Checked the teeth, and they had a few chips on the inside where you couldn't see. Thanks for all the help anyway.
