Here's the story. My battery went dead, it was 7 years old. I replaced it. The new one went dead. I returned it. The next new one went dead. I replaced the voltage regulator, as I was told by my repair guy that it was most likely the problem. I charged the battery, it ran fine. Next morning the battery was dead again. I've been told to take out the generator and have it checked. Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Rich

My Ford does the same and I was told the points are sticking together when I cut the tractor off. I take one of the battery cables off when i turn off the tractor and that way the battery does not run down. I hope to fix the points soon. they work ok it just runs the battery down, but not always, depends if the point are in the open or shut position when the tractor is turned off.

I do the same thing, I keep my battery disconnected so it won't discharge. Please let me know if the points correct the problem. I was going to take the generator out this weekend to check it, but we're supposed to have snow Sunday, and I'll need my tractor for that, so I may wait to next weekend. I'll post the results when I do.

If your trac has the original wiring check for bare spots. Some old wiring the insulation will crumble if it moved. I bought a TE-20 last spring for $200 and the wiring had very little insulation left on it. I rewired it and it runs fine.

When it is dark out take one of the battery cables off a post and see if you get a spark with all switches off. This should tell you if you have a draw on your battery. Are you sure it is charging to start with??

I followed your advice, and got a spark with the switch off. So I put a meter on the key switch. It draws .01 volt even with the switch off. In 20 minutes the battery went from 7.35 volts to 7 volts. I'm going to replace the switch and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for the advice!

Rich

Definetly have the generator checked. When the tractor is running you should have about 7 volts..assuming the 6 volt system. I would guess there is an internal short in the generator draining the battery. That is probably what killed your old battery.
