I have had and used my TO30 for 11 years, never really realizing it was 6v with neg gnd. Recently I have been looking to convert to 12v and saw the tractor was wired pos to equipt and neg to gnd.Is this ok for it to be switched, I didnt switch it and should I switch it back? It has been running like this for 11 years but always hard to start, would making it pos gnd take care of my starting problems and what needs changing to go back to pos gnd. THX

All 6V tractor systems used by H.Ferguson are pos ground. Switch the battery terminals so that the pos goes to ground and the neg cable goes to the starter. If you have another 6V battery use it, the one that's been used backwards probably won't work wired correctly now. It is possible to reverse charge a battery, and the terminals are actually reversed;ie. pos became neg and neg became pos. A properly maintained 6V system will perform just as well as a properly maintained 12V system. Remember though- do not use 12V cables on a 6V system, they cannot carry enough amperage for the 6V system and will cause slow cranking/hard starting. A battery shop can supply the proper cables ("0" gauge is minimum for 6V). Have you noticed that the amp gauge displays backwards? That is the only thing that will indicate reversed terminals-unless the leads were switched when the battery was wired backwards. If that's the case, switch the leads after you wire the battery to pos ground. Clean all the connections and tighten them, apply a thin coat of battery terminal sealer there, and your tractor should start is most any weather. The original 6V battery had a 80 amp/hr rating. I hope this is what you need. Here's a link to more than you ever wanted to know about batteries.
