Hey I am getting ready to put in my new pto shaft and was looking around up inside the rear-end and there is all kinds of gunk. Got out what I could with what ever I gould get in there. What would be something quick and easy to flush it out with? The hyd. oil looks good, should I change it also?

John, You don't mention what tractor you have. I just cleaned out the hydraulics on my TEA-20. What I found is water had gotten in at the cover for the spring control plunger. The top of the pump area, piston, control fork etc. rusted from the condensation and rust dropped into the hydraulic oil. A bad thing because now I had a mild grinding compound. This has happened to others in discussions on this board. The rear axel housing had a opening below the spring and some rust had entered the rear axle area too. I would remove top link spring and cover and see if you obsreve rust. If so I would pull the lift cover (heavy but not a hard job) and check for rusted control spring and lift cover. Cleaned and painted mine with glyptal. With cover off and pto shaft removed flush with a water soluable cleaner. Do Not use kerosene. I dropped the pump for an A-1 job. When its clean and dry refill with 80/90 weight mineral oil if you have the TO series machine. Lot of theories on oil but use only this, that is my opinion. Probably more than you want to do but worth it. Cheaper than a new pump and much easier than trying to track down a new lift fork.
Then you are set for years to come.
That is what I would do.
Good luck.
Joe
ps. if you want pictures of the inside with lift cover removed e-mail and I'll show you what I did.

John, I am assuming you removed all three drain plugs (transmission, hydraulic pump, differential) to remove the PTO shaft. While you have the shaft out this is a good time to clean out the water saturated oil that settles on the bottom of the cases. This goo can cause problems with your hydraulic pump and if there is enough water it can freeze and either cause your pump to quit are even break parts. Remove the inspection cover on the right hand side of the tractor that has the transmission dipstick to access the hydraulic pump. I found that solvents like kerosene were not very effective with removing the goo because of the high water content. I used methanol or your could use another water soluble solvent. It was able to make the goo more fluid so it would flow out the drain plugs. Do the same in the differential area. If you live in cold climates and use your tractor in the winter I would use the hydraulic oil 134 that is used in the Ford 9N-2N-8N which you can get at a New Holland Dealer.
