Just read in the archives that an improperly sized belt can cause charging problems. The old belt was smaller and sat down in the pullys but was replaced by the shop with a thick wide one when they did the overhaul. I sent the tractor back for several reasons, one of which was a dead battery. The called to tell me I needed a new generator and regulator.....could the belt be the problem?

No. The wide belt is right. Everyone wants to blame the system when it is probably all right. this is way to tell. first unhook the gen. from the wiring harness. hook a test lamp to the gen post marked G. ground the lead. then ground the post marked F with a test wire. start the tractor.
if the lamp burns bright you are probably ok on the generator itself. that leaves the regulator or the wires between. hook everything back up and then do what is known as polarizing the system. Take a wire from the hot post of the battery and momentairly (1 second) touch the output post on the gen. Start the tractor and see if it works. if it charges but is not correct you probably need the regulator adjusted. this is done by removing the cover and using a adjusting tool.

you should have a wide belt on a to-20 with a narrow belt the gen. will run faster but that won't hurt in fact it will charge better. i think you live near redgranite wi. call martin rebuilding for any alt. or gen. repairs he is very good
