FE 35: White smoke? from valve cover breather?

I have just rebuilt my FE 35 (minor-liners, pistons, rings, gaskets etc..) and have run into a problem, after being satisfied that the tractor was running OK (from a couple of short-medium runs), I got stuck into some reasonably heavy grass slashing and noticed 1) the temperature was beginning to climb, and 2) there appeared to be reasonably thick white (smoke/steam?) coming from the valve cover breather pipe. It went fine for about 40 minutes before the trouble. I parked it when the temperature got to about 200F and it was running awfully rough.
I am in the process of re-checking the valve clearances AND the timing. There is no water in the oil, the oil level is good (and constant), (the oil pressure is low, however this may just indicate that the big end bearings are loose.)
There is a lot of white smoke on startup (fuel)also if this is related? It ran really well the first couple of times.
Q. Have I just overheated it?
Q. Have I done some serious damage ?
Any help whatsoever is appreciated..... .

I suspect a leaking head gasket. Sounds to me like a leak between a coolant passage and a combustion chamber. A check of the plugs should show a problem. Did you check the head and block for flatness? Assuming you did, perhaps you worked the engine too hard before it was ready. 200deg. F is not going to hurt an engine normally. Retorque the head and see if perhaps one or more bolts are loose. I do not use gasket sealer on a head gasket, it lets the gasket slide around, and usually head gaskets have a sealing compound in them anyway. Thats my 2 cents. Good luck!

Thanks Ray,
I've stripped it all down and discovered that I had a problem with two of my conrod (big end) bearings. I'll have it all back together by tomorrow, and I'll let you know how I go. Your advice sounds a little more encouraging than a "cracked head" which was suggested on another forum. The plugs are injectors (diesel) and they all seem ok.
